Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has directed former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to record a formal statement upon his return to Kenya. The directive follows remarks Gachagua made while in the United States, where he alleged the existence of terrorism plots linked to high-level Kenyan officials.

The announcement was made during the Keiyo South Economic Empowerment Program on Saturday, August 9, where Murkomen expressed concern over Gachagua’s conduct and the impact of his claims on national security and Kenya’s international image.

Government Demands Accountability

According to Murkomen, Gachagua must provide detailed information about the alleged terrorist meetings he referenced. The Interior CS emphasized that such claims, particularly involving groups like Al-Shabaab, could not be ignored and warranted immediate investigation.

He also criticized the former DP’s use of sensitive security issues in an international setting, suggesting that it was politically motivated and reckless. Murkomen questioned how someone with such a disregard for the responsibilities of public office had previously held the position of Deputy President.

Deputy President Kindiki Supports the Directive

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, who also spoke at the event, supported the Interior Ministry’s stance. He urged law enforcement agencies to ensure that anyone claiming to have information about terrorist activities is compelled to assist with investigations by recording official statements.

Mandera Senator Adds Pressure

Mandera Senator Ali Roba had earlier joined the growing calls for accountability. He had urged the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to apprehend Gachagua, claiming that his statements were politically driven and aimed at misleading the public.

Gachagua’s US Tour Sparks Controversy

Gachagua has been in the United States since July 9, undertaking a two-month tour intended to connect with Kenyans in the diaspora and engage international stakeholders. His public remarks during this trip have, however, stirred political tensions at home, with accusations of jeopardizing national security and spreading misinformation.

Investigations Expected Upon Return

With mounting pressure from top government officials, the former DP is expected to face investigations upon his return to Kenya. Authorities are preparing to interrogate him regarding his claims, with the intention of determining their credibility and whether legal action is warranted.
